Meet Alethia Battles
Alethia Battles is a highly accomplished attorney, legal scholar, and licensed clinical social worker whose career uniquely positions her to serve as Probate Judge at a moment when families need both legal excellence and human understanding from the bench.

With more than two decades of service at the University of Michigan and Michigan Medicine, Attorney Battles has built an exceptional record at the intersection of law, healthcare, and family advocacy. She is widely respected for bringing precision, sound judgment, and compassion to complex cases involving guardianships, conservatorships, mental health, and estate matters—areas that demand not only mastery of the law, but an ability to understand the real-life consequences of every ruling.

Alethia Battles is the only candidate in this race with both the legal scholarship and hands-on probate experience necessary to lead Washtenaw County Probate Court.

As a legal scholar, she approaches every decision with rigor, fairness, and careful attention to the application of law. As a licensed clinical social worker, she understands trauma, capacity, and family dynamics in ways no other candidate can. The combination of these two disciplines, law and social work, will guide decisions in her courtroom that are not only legally sound, but thoughtful, humane, and effective.
"Probate court should be a place of clarity, not confusion; dignity, not delay; and fairness without exception."
~ Alethia Battles
